James Knox Polk was the eleventh president of the United States who served from 1845 - 1849. Polk was the first "dark horse" candidate, meaning before the election he wasn't well known. Polk believed in Manifest Destiny, and wanted to expand westward. He pledged to only serve one term, and kept his promise. However, just three months after leaving office, Polk died from cholera, making Polk have the shortest retirement of all presidents. He got half of Oregon, Texas, and tons of western territory from Mexico due to the Mexican-American war. He was the only Democrat in between the four Whig presidents.
Polk was born on November 2, 1795 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
Polk died on June 15, 1849 in Nashville, Tennessee, causing him to have the shortest retirement of all presidents.
