Rutherford Birchard Hayes was the 19th president of America from 1877 - 1881. He was previously a Civil War soldier for the Union and a governor of Ohio. Due to his controversial victory in the 1876 election and the Compromise of 1877, he promised to only serve one term. He was president during the difficult ending stages of Reconstruction.

Hayes died on January 17, 1893 in Fremont, Ohio.
