Ulysses Simpson Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant) was the 18th president of the United States from 1869 - 1877. Grant was previously a famous Union general in the Civil War who was widely known across the country for his battle victories out west and getting the top Confederate general, Robert E. Lee, to surrender. However, his presidency wasn't as great as his military career. He helped with the Compromise of 1877 that followed the controversial results with the 1876 election.
Grant was born on April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio. His birth name was Hiram Ulysses Grant.
Grant died of cancer on July 23, 1885 in Wilton, New York.
